The best AI investing tools, and what each is actually good for
Lots of products now claim to be “AI-powered.” Here they are grouped by the job they do, so you can pick based on what you actually need.
Prices and features change often. Check each provider's site for current details. Some links below are affiliate links.
1. General AI assistants: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity
Best for: reading and summarizing filings and transcripts, explaining concepts, and structuring research.
All four can search the web and read long documents. Perplexity cites sources inline by default, which makes fact-checking easier. ChatGPT and Claude are strong at analyzing uploaded 10-Ks and transcripts. Get much better results with our free stock research prompt generator.
2. Research platforms with quant ratings: Seeking Alpha
Best for: fundamentals, dividend safety grades, earnings-call transcripts, and crowd-sourced analysis.
Seeking Alpha's quant ratings score stocks on valuation, growth, profitability, momentum and earnings revisions. It's a fast way to screen ideas before deeper research. The dividend grades are especially popular with income investors.
3. Charting & screening: TradingView
Best for: technical analysis, custom screeners, alerts, and backtesting simple strategies.
TradingView's charts are the industry standard and its Pine Script language lets you code and test indicators. A large community library of scripts and ideas means you rarely start from scratch. The free tier is enough to start.
4. Automated investing: M1 Finance
Best for: hands-off, rules-based investing in a target allocation.
Not AI in the chatbot sense, but automation does the work: you define a portfolio “pie,” and deposits are automatically split to keep you on target. That suits dividend and index investors who use our dividend calculator to plan.
5. Modern brokerages: Public
Best for: commission-free investing across stocks, ETFs, bonds and treasuries in one app.
Public has added AI features that explain stock moves and summarize earnings, which helps beginners understand what they own.
How to choose
- Long-term investor: a general AI assistant plus a research platform for fundamentals is plenty.
- Active trader: TradingView for charts and alerts, plus our position size calculator for risk.
- Set-and-forget: an automated investing platform plus a compound interest plan.
Whatever you choose, be wary of any tool that promises guaranteed returns or “AI that beats the market.” The tools above help you research faster. None of them removes risk.
Common questions
Are AI stock picking services worth it?
Be skeptical. Ask for long, audited, out-of-sample track records. Research tools that speed up your own analysis usually give more dependable value than black-box stock picks.
